ratgeber.t-online.de: Borderline skills: dealing with emotional states of tension

(* Name changed by the editors)

Around 130,000 so-called live in Germany "unconnected" Young people between 17 and 19 years of age. When "unconnected" applies to anyone who does not go to school, is unemployed and has no relationship. Furthermore, these young people lack the financial and emotional support from their parents. This is the result of a study by the Center for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. The study looks at the period from 2000 to 2008 and is based on data from the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). Since 1984, 12,000 private households in Germany have been surveyed in the SOEP. The main topics include household composition, employment and family biography, income trends and life satisfaction.

Causes of Disconnection

As causes for the "Disconnectedness" According to the ZEW, parents have a low level of education and unstable family relationships. In these households, families seem to have fewer resources to support their children and invest in their education. This in turn has a negative effect on their professional future: "Further school or professional exams can become a difficult hurdle to overcome"says Friedhelm Pfeiffer, one of the study's authors. Furthermore, the young people find it difficult to adhere to the norms and rules of conduct of society.

Upward trend

If the adolescents live with their parents for the first 15 years of life, the risk of failure is eight percent lower than for adolescents who grow up with only one parent. According to the study, the number of "unconnected" Young people have a rising tendency: from 2000 to 2008 it accounted for 13 percent of 17 to 19 year olds, in the period 2006 to 2008 alone it was 17.7 percent.

“I can't anymore, who can help me?”, “Which suicide method is safe, quick and painless?” - frightening questions that are asked in suicide forums on the Internet. Adolescents and young adults with nicknames like "BlackFallen Angel", "Pro Suizid" and "Blutrausch" cavort in forums and chats in which there is only one topic: suicide. The best methods for suicide are discussed over several pages, tips for dying are given, philosophized about the “life afterwards” and problems are exchanged. When parents notice that their children are surfing these sites and are in close contact with virtual friends online, many get scared. After all, most of them know the stories of young people who get to know each other on the Internet and arrange to meet up in their deaths. But how dangerous are these suicide forums really? What are the signs of specific life fatigue and what can parents do in these cases?

Parental fears come true

In Germany, on average, someone takes their own life every 56 minutes. Experts suspect that someone tries every six minutes. The influence of suicide forums on these acts has so far hardly been researched. However, adolescents and young adults are the population group with the highest rate of suicide attempts; in young men of this age group, suicide is even the second leading cause of death, after traffic accidents. This was the case even before the internet and suicide forums existed. But there are frightening cases in which young people have arranged to meet on the Internet in order to kill themselves together. In 2001, a 17-year-old Austrian and a 24-year-old Norwegian fell from a cliff in Norway. They had only "met" each other on the Internet a few days beforehand and agreed to go to their deaths together.argumentative essay outline A year later, two young adults met in a parking lot in Berlin and shot each other. They got to know each other in a suicide forum, where they exchanged ideas with other anonymous participants. Their mothers knew that the two surfed the Internet a lot - also that they were on pages with the topic of dying. Little did they know that the 22-year-old and her 16-year-old chat partner planned to commit suicide for weeks.

There are also professionally run forums

Going on the Internet, even in suicide forums, is not a bad thing per se - the young people can exchange ideas, share their concerns and find people to talk to. In some forums, they even get help from professional advisors who moderate the forums and intervene if the forum members drift too much into suicidal topics or participants are specifically looking for suicide partners. Forum operators are legally obliged to report criminal offenses, such as soliciting suicide, selling lethal drugs or the like. But there is a whole range of forums on offer that glorify suicide as the sole problem solution and encourage those at risk of suicide in their intention. Here the police are not notified if illegal entries are made. Due to the large number of forums and chats on the Internet, forum operators are rarely held accountable.

Internet as a self-help group

Internet forums are seen by young people as a kind of self-help group where they can exchange ideas about their problems. What they don't want to discuss with parents or friends from school is openly discussed here. Since the conversation partners feel the same way, friendships in the virtual world can often be more intense than those in the real world. But this harbors dangers: The young people only feel understood in the forums, communicate less in real life and possibly lose themselves more and more in their death fantasies - after all, others feel like them. Youth activists also draw attention to this problem. Adolescents and young adults seeking help with their pubescent Weltschmerz, their family problems or serious psychological problems do not turn to trained psychologists or educators, as when calling a counseling center, but are "advised" and "taken care of" by like-minded people. Sadly, you can see in the dozen cases of joint suicides or suicides in front of the webcam that this can create a dangerous momentum of its own.

Dangers of forums for young people

- Members incite one another to act and those at risk are drawn along by determined people. Basically, the danger increases for young people who are already at risk - The young people transfer the problems of others to themselves - They are under pressure to justify themselves if an announced act is not carried out - Suicidal acts are glorified - Dangerous attitudes are rapidly spreading. - The forums offer the opportunity to withdraw from the real world. - Natural inhibition thresholds for suicide are reduced.>> continue to page 2

Kader Loth laments her decision from two years ago: She had her uterus surgically removed in 2018. In retrospect, she would have made another choice now.

She fell ill with endometriosis and had her uterus removed, that was in 2018. In retrospect, however, Kader Loth would have made another choice and sought therapy. This realization burdens them very much.

The 47-year-old felt left alone with the diagnosis of endometriosis. In this disease, the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. This leads to very severe pain in the abdomen and back. Her doctors were overwhelmed, recommended the operation, Loth describes. "A big mistake. Today I regret the operation", She announced in the conversation "Promiflash" With.

Kader Loth can no longer carry children

In the meantime, she has dealt more with the topic and found therapy options that preserve the uterus. But that is now too late: Kader Loth can no longer have children. This fact burdens them very much: "When I see pregnant women everywhere, I still feel sad inside, as if I had failed as a woman."

Even then, shortly after the operation, she was feeling very bad. For months she just lay in bed and cried. "I didn't want to live anymore, I was completely devastated"she reported at the time. She could consider a surrogate mother if her ovaries are still producing eggs. Otherwise there is also the possibility of adoption, according to the reality star after the operation.

If it were up to the internet users, the expression would be "Bacon Barbie" just ahead "Ass fax" the "Youth word of the year" become. But the expert jury of the election initiated by Langenscheidt Verlag has now made a different decision: "Level limbo" is the youth word of 2010.

Youth word of the year 2010 - why "Level limbo"?

This year's jury, which despite its extremely heterogeneous cast made its decision unanimously, was impressed by the composition of the two terms "level" and "limbo" to a new independent word with a completely different meaning. With the new creation "Level Limbo "will be "constant drop in level" denotes, especially with regard to current TV formats, parties that get out of hand and meaningless conversations.

The jury justified its choice with the statement that by "Level limbo" the current development of the TV landscape with regard to its entertainment formats is viewed critically by the young people and commented accordingly. Furthermore, the young jury in particular found "that the term can be used in many areas, as shown by a large number of so-called 'level limbo' groups on Facebook or StudiVZ aktuell." For the third time, Langenscheidt Verlag called in cooperation with the youth magazine "Philistines" and the social network MySpace to vote for the “Youth Word of the Year”.

The jury's favorites

Criteria such as originality, creativity, new words and, of course, the current reference to socially relevant and youth-moving topics were the basis of the jury's assessment for the youth word of the year as well as for the entire Top Five 2010. Second place went to “Arschfax”, ie “the underpants label that hangs out of the back of the pants” and is very exciting because there is no simple high-level term for this phenomenon. "Ego surfing", so "search for yourself on the internet using search engines", made it to third place. This word is not fundamentally new: It appeared in international parlance for the first time in 1995, but in view of the increasingly widespread use of the so-called "Social media platforms" like MySpace or Facebook, now again high topicality in the youth language. The "dressed up girls in too tight clothes", the very popular among users "Bacon Barbie", was discussed long and hot by the jury, but had to be content with fourth place, because the young jury members in particular found the term too pejorative. The term often used when chatting or texting "n1, nice one"which means something like "well done !, great action !, pretty, nice", fought for fifth place.

"The words that were awarded are no longer a language for young people"

There was slight criticism of the Langenscheidt Verlag campaign from the German Language Society (GfdS). She referred to the election as "something very interesting and useful". The head of the GfdS language counseling, Lutz Kuntzsch, also said: "As sensible as the action is - the words that have been awarded are no longer used by young people. After all, youth language has the function of a secret or group language."

The corona numbers are not falling in Germany, which is one of the reasons why the federal government and states are adopting new measures today. Kader Loth has now been infected with Corona and speaks of it in tears.
