Curly Horses are also suitable for riders with horse hair allergies. (Photo: ddp)
For those who love horses but have to forego their hobby because of an annoying horse hair allergy, there is a new opportunity. American Bashkir Curly Horses are the names of the North American horses that are enjoying increasing popularity. The special feature: people are less allergic to the wavy hair of the beautiful animals. This is unique among horse breeds. A study by the University of Aachen showed that the curls of the Curlys only give off three weakly expressed allergens. In other horse breeds there are a total of seven aggressive allergy triggers.
Test recommended
The solution to the allergy problem lies in the hair structure: "The allergic person has an allergic reaction to the upper hair cells of the horse's hair" says Professor Frank Jugert from the University of Aachen. The cells of the Curlys release fewer allergens because proteins are found in the cells. "In this respect, one can speak of a hypoallergenic breed" so Jugert. The chance of not reacting with allergic symptoms such as irritated mucous membranes, sneezing or asthma is significantly lower, but not completely eliminated. If you decide to take riding lessons on a curly horse, you should definitely test beforehand how your individual body reacts to its hairy body dress. Little by little, more and more breeders and riding schools are interested in the curly horses.
Other special features
Outwardly, Curleys stand out in comparison to other horse breeds because of their fur. In summer it is short and wavy, whereas the winter fur of the animals is velvety soft to curly throughout. This is where the English name comes from "Curly" which means as much as curly. Even the eyelashes of the animals are arched up and their curly fur extends into the auricle. In spring the horses lose their entire mane, so that they are left without a forelock over the summer. Curlys do not get particularly big, they are grown with an average of 1.48 to 1.50 meters. And if you are looking for closer contact, you will notice something else: The curly four-legged friends smell not of horse, but of wool.
